GreenMegaFood
On this site you will find information on the GreenMegaFood Workshop - and the research in Promotion of healthy and sustainable food consumption through large scale public food systems
The workshop was held in Copenhagen, October 14th-15th 2010 - hosted by Food, People & Design at Aalborg University Copenhagen
Eating outside home is a growing phenomenon. Approximately one third of the total food expenditure takes place in large scale food systems. As any other type of food intake, eating out of home has implications on our individual health as well as on the environment and the climate, through the production and consumption phase. But large scale public food supply chains seem to have been neglected in the discussion about the strategies for food based climate mitigation and health promotion.
The workshop on GreenMegaFood systems is an attempt to set a new agenda. Since the food eaten in large scale food systems accounts for a large part of the total food expenditure, there is a great potential to facilitate a significant positive climate impact and to influence individual health through public procurement of food.
The workshop was a part of an international network program that aims to bring together researchers and practitioners within the fields, in order to exchange experience and to initiate international project cooperation. The core groups comes from Denmark, Brazil and China but the network is open to all.
The workshop contributions were mainly related to introduction of healthier food and/or climate friendly perspectives in food systems in different arenas e.g. hospital, school, kindergarten, workplace and public sport events.
